How to Play Playback Theatre

Sharing everyday experiences and watching them come alive on stage right away, that is Playback Theatre. Actors and musicians are delighted to turn your stories, whether short or long, into a spontaneous scenic form.

Every story, whether mundane or adventurous, light or heavy, deserves to be told and honoured through a theatrical rendering. A member of the group, the conductor, supports you in telling your story, draws out the essential moments and then chooses the scenic form in which the actors will play back what they heard. Sometimes tears flow, because the story is funny or because it cuts deep. Come and see it for yourself.

Playback Theatre was developed in the mid 1970s by Jonathan Fox and his wife Jo Salas in New York. Today this interactive form of improvisational theatre is performed in over 60 countries worldwide. National and international gatherings together with a worldwide network of certified trainers and schools, including the Centre for Playback Theatre, form the backbone of a theatre culture that, as art and as a form of communication, cultivates and fosters community building.
