How to Play Status Topping
A playing area is defined. Players are not allowed to choose a position outside this area.
The facilitator should keep an eye on whether the task remains solvable, because the more people enter the picture, the harder it tends to become to top the highest status.
Joining the scene must be voluntary.
Each person who joins must position themselves in such a way that they hold the highest status in the still image.
Once the person has found their position, they freeze. The facilitator asks the rest of the group whether the new person now has the highest status. If that is not the case, the person themselves has the option to change their position once more. If the status of the previous person has still not been topped, the rest of the group can give tips and suggestions to achieve the highest status.
Once that has been achieved, the next person may enter the picture.
Everyone else remains in their positions and stays in the freeze.
No talking, no sounds and no movements.
Items available in the room may be used.
This exercise builds concentration, teamwork and cohesion. It can be important when many status shifts happen in a piece or project, or when several characters are (meant to be) in high status.
It can also be used as a simple warm-up game, or to draw attention to the subtlety of high status.
